VANCOUVER INDIGENOUS MEDIA ARTS FESTIVAL

The 3rd annual Vancouver Indigenous Media Arts Festival (VIMAF) is a multi‐venue celebration of indigenous digital storytelling, literature, film, technology, and music. The West Coast’s only Indigenous Media Arts Festival showcases prominent indigenous filmmakers, artists, entertainers and authors including Ryan McMahon, Richard Van Camp, Marie Clements, Loretta Todd, Dana Claxton, Klee Benally, Leanne Simpson, Rueben George, Melina Laboucan-­Massimo and more. VIMAF seeks to contribute to the cultural discourse in independent production and to disseminate Indigenous stories.

2013 Strathcona CC Pub NightCome on down as old meets new at the Friends of Strathcona social evening of fun, food, friends, fundraising and big musical entertainment. The highlight of the night is the music of singers and musicians with long-time now-retired Strathcona Elementary School music teacher Mark Wardrop and The Hullabelugas. Silent auction, 50/50 draw and raffle prizes. Proceeds to fund the purchase of a new community centre van. Tickets can be purchased at the Strathcona Community Centre. Exhibition November 9 to December 22International Food Contest Exhibition
This photo exhibition showcases the diverse gastronomy in BC and promotes multiculturalism and communication between different cultural communities through food, culture and photographic art. Up to one hundred photographs submitted by the general pubic, food lovers and photographers have been selected by the jury committee for this exhibition. On Saturday November 16th 2pm – 3:30pm the Richmond Food Security Society will give a free lecture “Good Food and Good Fortune: Food Security In Migrant Communities.” For more information: 604- 658-8880 or www.cccvan.com.

Free Presentation on the Dovbush Dancers recent trip to Ukraine

This 85th Anniversary tribute interweaves oral history with live theatre and music, haunting choral singing and the driving rhythms of Ukrainian dance. Performed by a multi-generational cast of over sixty professional and community actors, singers, dancers and musicians. Inspired by stories and memories from the East End’s historic Ukrainian community, Bread & Salt is co-written by Beverly Dobrinsky and Savannah Walling and incorporates writings by Clifford Odets, Helen Potrebenko, Ivan Franko and Taras Shevchenko. The production is directed by James Fagan Tait with music directed by Beverly Dobrinsky and features: actors Montana Hunter, Stephen Maddock, Billy Marchenski, Helen Volkow; musicians Sheila Allen, Jonathan Bernard, Alex Chisholm, Mark Haney, Alison Jenkins, Bud & Heidi Kurz; Vancouver Folk Orchestra, Barvinok Choir; Dovbush Dancers; the AUUC School of Dance; conductors Gregory Johnson and Beverly Dobrinsky; Dance Directors Debbie (Wishinki) Karras and Laurel (Parasiuk) Lawry, and choreographic contributions by Serguei Makarov, Liliya Chernous, Gina Alpen (Con8 Collective) and Danya Karras.

The 17th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl is Vancouver’s three-day visual arts, design and crafts festival. This event involves more than 15,000 people visiting artists in their studios in the area bounded by Main Street and Victoria Drive, north of First Avenue to the waterfront. Mark your calendars! The Asian Canadian Writers’ Workshop (ACWW) is pleased to present Canada’s first ever literary festival celebrating Asian Canadian literary talent. Between November 21 and November 24, the University of British Columbia’s Learning Exchange in Vancouver’s Chinatown will be hosting literASIAN: A Festival of Pacific Rim Asian Canadian Writing, which promises to be a memorable series of readings, workshops, panel discussions and book launches featuring literary works that span the genres: science-fiction, graphic novels, non-fiction, and children’s fiction.
