KUTZ & DAWGS A new Hip Hop Musical

Using the storylines of Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story as inspiration, culturally and socially diverse youth cast members in collaboration with professional artists created this original hip hop musical. In this thought-provoking work, the young performers portray rivaling Kutz (alley cats) and Dawgs (junkyard dogs) in a cautionary tale that explores the destructive force of gang violence. With a grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage Youth Take Charge Program, Vancouver based Miscellaneous Productions debuted the premiere at the Children’s Festival in May 2012. ABORIGINAL CULTURAL SHOWCASE

There is an active Aboriginal culture program at Oppenheimer and every day something is happening, be it drumming, carving, painting, beading, medicine healing or sharing of stories. As part of the Gallery Gachet and Oppenheimer Park Community Art Show, the Park is pleased to present a showcase of many of the Aboriginal artists working, sharing, and creating their work. See carving demonstrations; get a close look at the work; ask about the Memorial Totem Pole; and muse on the Welcome Posts. The Harmony of Nations Drum Group will perform during the afternoon. Come and see what Aboriginal artists are doing at Oppenheimer Park. Everyone welcome. Free

This interactive workshop is for staff and social media volunteers working with Downtown Eastside groups involved with community arts. Join CACV Administrator and social media whiz Mary Bennett and meet and network with other individuals and groups. Bring your own laptop, borrow one or just observe and enjoy. A limited number of laptops will be available to use during the session. If you want to borrow a laptop please arrive by 1:45pm. BUILDING: a Social Writing Evening

Join the Downtown Eastside’s exciting Thursdays Writing Collective, directed by Elee Kraljii Gardiner, for a raucous social writing session of creative writing prompts based on architectural and poetic space. Participants will construct mini-buildings from blocks and materials, write about them and other prompts including pictures of buildings and concepts of space. Participants will have the opportunity to share what they’ve written and contribute to the forthcoming publication The Stanza Project.
The Dunlevy Snackbar will prepare refreshments on the theme.

Theatre in the Raw presents an original live radio drama on Arts Rational, a long lasting Co-op Radio program. Tonight’s play is Talk Medicine, an Honorable Mention in the recent 7th Biennial One Act Playwriting Contest written by Alberta playwright Sherryl Melnyk, current Ph.D. student in Fine Arts at the University of Calgary. The monologue centres on a man reminiscing after suffering a heart attack, and his need to talk to ease his stress. The play focuses on the development of his moral character and the various ethical forks in the road that he has faced. Roger Howie, a long time performer and writer with Theatre In the Raw, plays Lester, and Jay Hamburger directs. This presentation is the twenty-third original radio play that Theatre In the Raw has presented on Arts Rational. For your listening pleasure.
