Axé Capoeira (pronounced AH-shay cap-oh-AIR-ah) was founded in Brazil and arrived in Canada in 1990 to perform at the Vancouver Children’s Festival. Since then they have become one of the premier capoeira organizations in North America. The DTES-based Axé Capoeira presents a show of spectacular dance, acrobatics, music and educational entertainment. Expect to be enlivened by the drums and vocals of Brazilian percussion music, amazed by gravity-defying acrobatics, and inspired as the show ends in an interactive dance including the entire audience.

COMEDY with Sam Bob

Free your trickster, find your voice, and have fun! Take this performance and stand-up comedy workshop with Sam Bob, one of the city’s funniest actors. Sam’s traditional name is Tulkweemultk’ of the SnawNaw-us First Nation and he has performed nationally in theatre, radio, television and film. Sam says his true reward from working in the arts comes from his active mentoring of First Nation’s youth with the IIDF program at Capilano University. Everyone welcome. Free

One of Vancouver’s most interesting attractions, the Vancouver Police Museum is located in the former Coroner’s Courtroom. Built in 1932 the building is a municipally designated heritage structure and houses an extensive collection relating to the history of policing in Vancouver. Here you will find exhibits about some of the city’s most famous criminals, and the men and women who enforce our laws. There are also special displays on some of the teams that make up the police force, including the Mounted Squad, Dog Squad, Marine Squad and others. Numerous organizations in the Downtown Eastside provide opportunities for local residents to participate in art making. Four of these organizations are featured in our new Festival Arts Stroll.
Gallery Gachet has an extensive and storied history producing art shows created by and with professional and non-professional artists. The Carnegie Community Centre provides opportunities for Downtown Eastside involved residents to take art programs and workshops and to present their work. Atira Housing supports art making, community art projects and arts and craft retail sales through their project EWMA (Enterprising Women Making Art). And Mission Possible has StudioWorks Art Studio/Gallery and Pottery Facility to provide space for artists who are residents of the Downtown Eastside and don’t have room to practice their craft.
Stroll. Dance your way down the street in a procession. Enjoy gallery openings, refreshments, friends and neighbours. Experience a sampling of the fascinating and diverse art that Downtown Eastside residents are creating here in the heart of our city. Free

In celebration of Gallery Gachet’s 20 Year Anniversary and the 5th annual Oppenheimer Park Community Art Show, we proudly present an exhibition from within the historically low-income and creative community of the Downtown Eastside and the “inclusionary zone” of the DEOD (Downtown Eastside Oppenheimer District). Featuring over thirty self-taught, new and emerging local artists, this exhibition offers a unique perspective into history, heart and home. The opening night procession leaves Oppenheimer at 5pm and is led by Brad Muirhead and the Hastings Street Band. At 6pm join Harmony of Nations at Gallery Gachet for a traditional welcome, followed by music with the band SCOW. Free

THE DAY OF THE DEAD SHOW

Local artist and social activist Diane Wood exhibits artwork, paintings, figurines and decorations she has created over the years to celebrate the Latin American Day of the Dead festival in the Downtown Eastside. It’s colourful, it’s a celebration…that’s what she likes about the Day of the Dead. Diane has followed the tradition of creating “calaveras” – tableaux with little skull-headed characters. Some of them you may recognize! Join the artist at the opening reception on Friday Oct. 26 as part of the Festival Art Stroll and at 7:30pm with folkloric Mexican songs and storytelling by Isabel Ramirez and poetry by Diane. Free

Enterprising Women Making Art (EWMA) is honoured to present the Eastside Friday Celebration as part of the Festival Art Stroll. Join us and celebrate the rich culture and tradition of “women’s art’ in an evening of music and art featuring work by EWMA artists and artisans. EWMA, an initiative of Atira Women’s Resource Society, supports women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to work together and develop an alternative form of business or employment. BARRIO FLAMENCO: Flamenco for the People

Celebrate the spirit of the Downtown Eastside with an unforgettable night of live flamenco music and dance! Flamenco is an art form by and for the people, danced and played with spirit, ferocity, joy, laughter and tears. ‘Barrio’ refers to the vibrant and tight-knit neighbourhoods in southern Spain where flamenco originated. The evening, hosted by Kelty McKerracher, features some of the most compelling flamenco dancers, singers and musicians in the city. Some students of Kelty’s community flamenco classes will also share the stage. Join us for an exciting juerga (flamenco party) to play, pray, laugh, cry, enjoy, and stamp your feet!
