In the grand environs of a converted Downtown Eastside funeral home, I, Braineater and 12 Midnite present an 8000 square foot show of art and cars! From Braineater’s classic blockhead paintings and Midnite’s graffiti imagery and neon art to work so fresh it’ll still be sticky – fans old and new will get a chance to see Lowbrow as it was intended: really big and a little scary. Jean L. Kares creates works in response to traditional Japanese textiles, Chinese paintings and the rich repository of the world’s spiritual traditions. She has a strong interest in collage, in particular the synergistic juxtaposition of pattern, colour and image that evokes greater meaning. In this group of works that employ textile media and its multiple techniques, the patterns and flow of the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden are suggested, reflected and amplified. MALETA [SUITCASE]

Maleta [suitcase] is a collaborative art project tackling the theme of migration and an opportunity for aspiring Filipino-Canadian artists to use their artistic vision to voice the issues of the Filipino community in Canada. Through a framework of community collaboration, critical engagement and developing art practice, Sinag Bayan Cultural Collective hopes to engage the Filipino community and Canadian public to look deeper into issues surrounding migration and participation in Canada. Artist-in-residence Wing Diocson Yap of Montreal will install a large-scale triptych painting in the gallery that addresses the common experiences of Filipinos migrating to Canada. Sinag Bayan curates a group exhibition of visual art and video installations by emerging and professional Vancouver artists of Filipino descent. SEW WHAT? Diane Wood

Fabric Art by DTES resident, artist, poet and community activist Diane Wood. Having studied fine art as a young woman in Montreal, Diane’s creative work has been shaped by the streets, poverty, pop culture and music scene. She has done front line crisis work in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and her involvement with the issues of addiction, abuse and recovery are the basis of her art. Mixing her Guerilla Girl sensibility with pre-Christian spirituality, Diane draws on a long history of women’s crafts. Newly renovated on the Rice Block of 800 East Hastings in Strathcona, the Hasty Hawk Gallery opens its doors for local events. Run by Mad Dog, Strathcona’s own Gerry Dallman. On Saturday evenings bring your weird, bizarre homemade musical instruments for a jam session and Mad Dog will record it for posterity. Not your homemade guitar or bamboo flute: it has to be beyond the pale, outside the realm of normal human experience.
