POWELL STREET WALKING TOUR
with Raymond Nakamura
Sunday November 6, 10:30am-12pm
Meet SE corner of Powell and Jackson

Join Raymond Nakamura as he takes you back in time to the vibrant pre-war community of Japanese Canadians and Japanese immigrants who lived and worked in the area. The community grew and thrived over a fifty-year period from the 1890s until its forced removal in 1942. The tour will focus on the 300 and 400 blocks of Powell Street, the commercial heart of the community. Raymond’s knowledge of the area is both personal and fact-based: his family lived on Powell Street and he worked as Education Coordinator at the Nikkei Centre. We will end the tour at the Vancouver Japanese Language School (487 Alexander). $10 for non-residents, pay what you can for local residents

Community Celebrations

ASSOCIATION OF UNITED UKRAINIAN CANADIANS COMMUNITY CONCERT & SUPPER
Sunday November 6, 3pm
Ukrainian Hall, 805 E. Pender

The festival ends on a high note with the annual AUUC concert and supper at the Ukrainian Hall. The AUUC is pleased to present their season opening concert for the closing afternoon of the Festival. The concert offers a welcoming atmosphere of Ukrainian traditions, lively music, invigorating dance and colourful costumes. Featuring all of the Hall’s performing arts groups: the Barvinok Choir led by choral director Beverly Dobrinsky; the Vancouver Folk Orchestra – one of the oldest and largest folk orchestras in Vancouver; and the award-winning Dovbush Dancers.

Special guests include: William Nahanee (Kwel-a-s-nexw), Ingrid Gurvan, and Ingrid’s daughters Shaquinni and Sabrina who offer a traditional Squamish Greeting of the day in song and dance; Doug Masuhara and the Seymour Youth Taiko Drummers present the powerful beats of taiko; and fifth-generation Chinese Canadian Todd Wong brings a cultural fusion to his accordion playing, and is joined by Andy Fielding, an accomplished accordion player with the folk orchestra. [update: Andy is not able to join Todd for today’s performance.] The crowning jewel of today’s concert is a musical tribute to The Milestones, a group Gary Cristall has called “the finest folk music ensemble in BC in the sixties.” Harry Hoshowsky, a musician with the Vancouver Folk Orchestra was also a member of this music group. We look forward to presenting a music tribute to Harry and The Milestones! After this cultural feast, we gather downstairs for a delicious traditional Ukrainian Supper! Concert and supper $20. Be sure to book your tickets in advance for this very popular event. For tickets call 604-879-2089.

If you’ve never danced a step in your life, here is your chance to get your feet wet in musical celebration across generations. Follow the dance caller’s instructions and you’ll be an expert in minutes. Oh my!?! Where oh where is the ever popular Vancouver Japanese Language School & Japanese Hall Food Bazaar!?!
Rika Uto, VJLS-JH President writes:  “The VJLS-J’s 1928 historic schoolhouse is undergoing a heritage childcare renovation. We worked with local architect James Burton to redesign the building to meet licensing and heritage preservation specifications. As soon as the building permit comes through, we will begin construction and hope to open our new preschool and daycare in September 2012. We don’t have access to our kitchen so we regrettably have had to cancel the Fall Food Bazaar. We are happy to be hosting “Tales of Powell Street” at this year’s Festival on Saturday October 29.”
