“The hood is like me—lots of warts, pimples and a rough exterior with a slight hint of danger. But if one cares to look—a place of complexities. Danger and excitement abound, but (an) oasis of love and warmth are here. Neighbour helping neighbour, acts of charity and kindness are everywhere. All one has to do is look.”

DTES Small Arts Grants

The Vancouver Foundation and the Carnegie Community Centre have teamed up to create the “Downtown Eastside Small Arts Grants” program.  The one-year pilot program, which is funded by Vancouver Foundation donors, awards DTES artists up to $1000 toward developing their craft. The grant is designed to help showcase the talent of a wide variety of artists – in all practices – as well as help them take their careers to the next level.

Projects sponsored by the program include:

Installation
IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE Stan Proboszcz
Friday November 20, 6pm-10pm
Saturday November 21, 11am-6pm
Sunday November 22, 11am-6pm
SW corner of Jackson and E. Hastings

Stan Proboszcz is an artist and conservation biologist living in the DTES. Much of his work highlights his interest in humans as organisms of the animal kingdom and in exposing the stark realities of the science of life. This installation will transform a vacant lot into something strangely poignant and ephemeral to document daily life in the urban jungle and to explore the state of the urban primate in 2009 in Vancouver.
