LIVING STORIES
Tuesday November 3, 7pm-9pm
Carnegie Community Centre 3rd floor Learning Centre, 401 Main

The Festival invites you to see four digital stories compiled from material gathered this June at Eastside Stories, a weekend where Downtown Eastside involved residents shared stories of what they have done and are doing to survive and build community. The sessions covered in the digital stories include: The Fight for Community Recognition, where speakers shared their struggles to form DERA; It’s a Long Story…, about being Aboriginal and an artist in the DTES; Three Guys and an Alley, memories of growing up around Hogan’s Alley; and Standing Up for Community featured long-time activists who convinced the City to abandon plans for urban renewal in favour of rehabilitating existing homes. If you missed Eastside Stories, here is your chance to hear what the fascinating guests said about living, playing and standing up for who we are. A number of the session participants will be in attendance and we could pick up right where we left off.  Documentation and editing by Projections. You can also view the digital stories online HERE. Everyone welcome. Refreshments. Free

Enjoy an intimate evening of gospel, blues and original work with Dalannah Gail Bowen, one of Vancouver’s premier vocalists. This is a great opportunity to hear great music with a great singer. Dalannah, a proud Downtown Eastside resident, revived her singing career in 2003 when she participated in the landmark In The Heart Of A City: The Downtown Eastside Community Play (Vancouver Moving Theatre/Carnegie). Her first CD Mamma’s Got the Blues, of which the title track was a finalist in the 2008 International Songwriting Awards, continues to receive international airplay. Settle in on a cold November Tuesday and listen to some fine music with Dalannah, accompanied by Harris Van Berkel on guitar and Andre Lachance on stand-up bass. Free
