Open Studio
FIRST NATIONS ARTIST STUDIO
October 23 – 25 & October 28 – November 1, 12pm – 4pm

On weekday afternoons during the Festival, the artists of the Raven’s Eye Studio will open the doors to host an ongoing First Nations artist studio. A group of artists work in the studio on a regular basis and they are happy to talk with you. See the artwork, talk to the artists. Artists include studio coordinator Jerry Whitehead, painter and muralist, and sculptor Gary Oliver. Make sure you take the opportunity to talk with Jerry about the spectacular mural, Through the Eye of the Raven, on the side of the Orwell Hotel where the studio is based on the ground floor. Free

LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER

Carnegie Learning Centre 3rd floor, 401 Main
The Carnegie Learning Centre has been working on the theme “Learning from each other” throughout the fall. Students and volunteers will lead off the afternoon session by sharing new writing, performance and digital stories. Then everyone at the workshop will get a chance to share their own experiences of “learning from each other.” Writings will go into a future booklet. Everyone welcome! Free

Artist Vern Clare has lots of fun arts and crafts ideas up his sleeve. For this workshop, Vern will help you explore colourful techniques of scratch art around the themes of Day of the Dead. Vern is a veteran in the East Van alternative art scene known for his giant puppets, carnival music, community art workshops and political activism. Free

HALLOWE’EN DANCE & COSTUME PARTY

Tonight is Hallowe’en and the spooky Carnegie Centre invites you to put on your most frightful face and join in the dance! The band tonight is The Do-Rites who play a danceable mix of mid-century styles including rockabilly, country, blues and jazz. The Do-Rites Trio is composed of Steve Taylor on drums, Joanie Kepler on upright bass, and frontman Jimmy Roy on vocals, guitar and steel guitar who says, “We’ll have the joint jumpin’!” The band can be heard every Sunday evening at the Revel Room on Abbot and Cordova. Brush up your scary moves and join the ghouls at Carnegie for a bone-rattling dance! Free

Theatre In the Raw presents five scenes with six actors from the upcoming musical The Raymur Mothers by Bob Sarti and Bill Sample, directed by Jay Hamburger. This will be a live radio broadcast of dramatic highlights from the larger theatrical work. The play is based on the true story of mothers from the Raymur Housing project in the early 1970s who couldn’t stand to see their children cross the treacherous railroad tracks to get to elementary school every morning. What did they do? Tune in to Arts Rational and find out how these young mothers banded together to take charge of a situation that was ground breaking to a neighbourhood close to our hearts.
