Here’s an opportunity to learn from the best! One Pot cooking workshop 2 with Diane Brown '12 - photo Tom QuirkDiane Brown is a long-time cook and community food activist in the Downtown Eastside. She has worked in the Carnegie kitchen for seventeen years, is the creator of the website onepot.ca and writer of One Pot Cookbook: Dinner for One. Both cookbook and website are designed for people with little cooking experience, minimal cooking tools and challenging budgets. Find out how easy it is to make awesome food on a hotplate. Get advice on how to cook dishes you would like to make for yourself at home. Fun, easy, healthy and tasty! Everyone welcome. Free

Open Studio
FIRST NATIONS ARTIST STUDIO 
October 23 – 25 & October 28 – November 1, 12pm – 4pm 
Raven’s Eye Studio, 458 E. Hastings
On weekday afternoons during the Festival, the artists of the Raven’s Eye Studio will open the doors to host an ongoing First Nations artist studio. A group of artists work in the studio on a regular basis and they are happy to talk with you. See the artwork, talk to the artists. Artists include studio coordinator Jerry Whitehead, painter and muralist, and sculptor Gary Oliver. Make sure you take the opportunity to talk with Jerry about the spectacular mural, Through the Eye of the Raven, on the side of the Orwell Hotel where the studio is based on the ground floor. Free

FIRST LOOK AT FIRST NATIONS DRAWING

Join artist Christine MacKenzie as she takes you through North West Coast drawing. You will learn basic formline and create your own original piece of art. Christine is from Kwakiutl territory and of the Eagle and Killer Whale clan. She grew up in Coast Salish traditional territory. A light snack will be provided. Everyone welcome. BELLY LAUGHS, A NIGHT OF COMEDY

The first half of the evening features comics from Stand Up for Mental Health with guest host Randy Goodchild and our local favourite funny guy Paul Decarie. What’s so funny about mental health? Come and find out! The second half of the evening we are thrilled to welcome back Vancouver’s longest-running Asian-Canadian sketch comedy collective, Assaulted Fish (aka Diana Bang, Marlene Dong, Kuan Foo and Nelson Wong). With edgy writing and energetic performances, everything from birth to reincarnation is fair game for the comedy troupe. Assaulted Fish is delighted to celebrate its 10th anniversary with the 10th Annual Heart of the City Festival. Free

EASTSIDE FRIDAY & MOSAIC RECEPTION

Come join Enterprising Women Making Art (EWMA) in their newly-relocated studio in an evening that celebrates the rich culture and tradition of “women’s art” and features work by EWMA artists and artisans. EWMA celebrates the completion of the mosaic project “Telling Herstories of food in the Downtown Eastside” inspired by the multi-year project Making Art Through Dialogue Series. Ann Thorsteinsson and Bruce Walther, lead artists on the Mosaic project will attend the reception. Special musical guest for the evening, in their debut performance, is Resonance, a duo with singer and guitarist Peggy Wilson and vocalist Rose Eide. Everyone welcome to Eastside Friday. Free

HOT JAZZ AT THE CARNEGIE – New Jazz Songs from the Downtown Eastside

Hot Jazz at the Carnegie: Finger snappin’, toe tappin’, head boppin’ hot music with the Carnegie Jazz Band, comprised of enthusiastic amateur jazz musicians and premiere vocalist and Vancouver blues queen Dalannah Gail Bowen under the wonderful tutelage of multi-instrumentalist and composer Brad Muirhead. This special evening of hot jazz from the Downtown Eastside features new jazz compositions by members of the band and the community, including: Patrick Foley, Randy Morrison, Brad Muirhead, Mike Richter, Gerry Teahan and Gary Wildeman. Expect something different as each composition, just like our DTES community, is as unique as the composer! The band is also thrilled to welcome back special guest, veteran jazz trombonist Dennis Esson. Free
