TO/FROM BC ELECTRIC RAILWAY: 100 YEARS

Centre A is pleased to present a group exhibition celebrating the historic BC Electric Railway (BCER) building’s centennial anniversary.  Addressing the building’s importance to the collective memory of Vancouver, six contemporary artists draw on the neighborhood’s expansive history to consider the building’s significance, with new works by Raymond Boisjoly, Vanessa Kwan, Evan Lee and Cindy Mochizuki. The exhibition also includes selections from Stan Douglas’ series, The Malabar People, seen for the first time in Vancouver, as well as never-before-seen historical photographs of BCER. REALITY OF THE IDEAL: Art by Wai Yee Chiu and Synn Kune Loh

Born in China, Synn Kune Loh studied cultural psychology in the USA and Canada and studied experimental art at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. An accomplished painter, Synn Kune’s painting style has evolved from fluidly spontaneous to meticulously accurate. He is exhibiting together with artist Wai Yee Chiu to explore the visual expression of both ideal and reality. An internationally accomplished artist, Wai Yee’s outstanding creativity allows her to master various media, from rice paper to sculpture and installations. AN EXHIBIT INTRODUCING CONFUCIAN THOUGHT

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, 578 Carrall

The exhibition panels, created by the Beijing Confucius Temple Museum, introduce key Confucian philosophical concepts in Chinese and English. Leaders in China are studying Confucianism again, a philosophy that spent decades out of favour. Confucius was a man ahead of his time and many of his ideas still have much to teach today.
