CONTINUOUS JOURNEY
Saturday October 20, 4pm – 7pm
Centre A, 2 W. Hastings

In 1914 a Sikh entrepreneur based in Singapore, chartered a Japanese boat, the Komagata Maru, to carry Indian immigrants to Canada. When the ship  arrived on May 23 in Vancouver’s harbour, many of the men onboard were veterans of the British Indian Army and believed that it was their right as British subjects to settle anywhere in the Empire. But as a direct result of a little known immigration policy, the ship was surrounded by immigration boats and thus began a stand-off of two months detention. (2004, 83 mins, Peripheral Visions)

Artist conversation to follow with filmmaker Ali Kazimi and Evan Lee, moderated by Haema Sivanson.
