Artists discuss ethics and practices in redress within Canada, featuring panelists Sid Chow Tan (Chinese Canadian), Gunargie O’Sullivan (First Nations), Dolores Dallas (First Nations), and a member of the Japanese Canadian community. Watch short videos and hear from artists highlighting the need for ethical redress in Canada. Presented by Fearless Media, sponsored by Stantec Engineering and the Downtown Eastside Community Arts Network. MUNCH includes lunch.

DESIGNING A COMMUNITY PLAY
with Ruth Howard

Join us for a public workshop on costume design with visiting Toronto artist Ruth Howard. An artist of international scope and with many years of design experience under challenging circumstances, Ruth will introduce us to costume design starting with creating a visual world for theatre and relating design to story and themes. She will then move to practical and artistic matters – scrounging for materials; incorporating input from volunteers and collaborators; supervising workshops; and discovering how limited budgets and resources can work for – rather than against you. Activities will include hands-on design exercises to generate fun ideas that culminate into a collective design concept. Free

With visiting artists Jimmy Ouma Okello of Nairobi, Kenya and Cathy Stubington, Artistic Director of Runaway Moon Theatre in Enderby, BC. Join us for an international Kenya/Enderby/DTES exchange in an intimate, informal and relaxed setting. Jimmy will talk about his work in Kenya where he uses theatre for youth empowerment and Cathy will share her experiences of presenting several big theatrical projects for her rural community involving hundreds of people, which inspired the DTES Community Play! Together they will talk about their joint international theatre project, Food for Thought, a two-year series of food spectacles inspired by locally grown food. Refreshments provided. Free

COMMUNITY OPERA IN THE INNER CITY

Opera in inner cities? Absolutely. It’s happening in the Downtown Eastside, it’s happening in Toronto! Jumblies Theatre in Toronto, recently produced Bridge of One Hair, a community opera for 100 performers from multiple communities in the Dundas/Islington area. The DTES love affair with opera – European, Chinese and homegrown – dates back to the 1890s and is still going strong. From last year’s popular opera Condemned produced by the Carnegie Opera Project, to new opera seeds being developed by Carnegie and partners and the on-the-horizon development of the Pantages Theatre and its resident company Vancouver City Opera. Hear about these exciting projects and exchange insights with visiting artist Ruth Howard (Jumblies Theatre), Ethel Whitty (Director of Carnegie Community Centre), composer Earle Peach and writers-in-development of new DTES community operatic works including Michelle La Flamme, Shon Wong, Sid Chow Tan, Leith Harris and Patrick Foley. Venga y entreténgase haciendo cruces y otros adornos que nos servirán para decorar y llenar de muchos colores la Celebración del Día de los Muertos, la cual se llevará a cabo el 1ero. de noviembre. NO importa si no tiene experiencia o considera que no puede hacer adornos, ya que tendremos personas ayudándonos, lo importante es expresar nuestras ideas y aprender entre todos. Estos talleres son completamente gratis y todos los materiales serán proveídos.

Come to St. James’ Church and join in two decoration-making workshops being held to make masks, crosses and other decorations for the annual Day of the Dead Celebration being held Thursday November 1st. Community murals are a powerful means to give voice to communities and their accomplishments, struggles, hopes and dreams. The Aboriginal Front Door community meeting welcomes one of Vancouver’s most exciting artists, Downtown Eastside painter, printmaker and muralist Richard Tetrault to talk about his community mural projects throughout the DTES, Vancouver and internationally. He also will give insight into, and discuss the impact of, extraordinary murals created by other communities around the Americas. Everyone welcome. Free

STAYING PUT: HOUSING LOCAL ARTISTS

CORE Artist Housing Co-op, 275 Alexander
Panelists: Core Artists Live/Work Cooperative representative, Anne Marie Slater and Wendy Pedersen. Facilitated by Dalannah Gail Bowen. Artists and housing activists share their experience of living in the DTES and talk about their efforts to increase affordable housing in order to keep our community intact. Learn how Core is considered a best practice for new artist housing construction; how artists living with children manage the legacies and lessons of ACE (Artists for Creative Environments) whose advocacy work in the 1980’s sparked the boom of artist live/work spaces; and discuss ideas for the future of local artist housing.
