Gallery Gachet presents an interdisciplinary party at the crossroads of four festivals! Check out this evening of Filipino Performance Art, First Nations, Pinoy, and Latina Hip Hop, African Spoken Word and Chinese electronic remixes that address Canada’s immigrant experience.

Boonaa, in his first Vancouver appearance! Boonaa Mohammed, Toronto Spoken Word/Hip Hop artist and 2007 CBC Poetry Face-Off “Best New Artist.” Sinag Bayan (Vancouver) presents the outcome of their performance art residency with Philippines-based Mideo Cruz and Racquel De Loyola. Sinag Bayan is a cultural arts collective that combines performance art, theatre, song, spoken word and visual arts and is dedicated to bringing to light the stories and experiences of the migrant Filipino. Direct from Saskatchewan, Eekwol and Mils are two of the top native hip hop artists in the country and represent their activist roots by living and creating as supporters of Hip Hop and Indigenous culture and rights. Genetics, Latina twin sisters from East Vancouver, perform soulful hop hop and T.Cee and Riffraff are young and emerging Filipino hip hop artists. From Vancouver, producer, DJ, and electronic artist Jeet Kei the Mazeguider spins electronic dance music to round out the night. Grand Slam programming team: Mildred German, Quin Martins, Irwin Oostindie and Ashly Von Steele.
On the gallery walls . . . Maleta [Suitcase] exhibition featuring Artist-in-Residence (from Montreal) Wing Diocson Yap, plus video, installation, and painting from 20 Vancouver Filipino visual artists.

Walk
A HOMELESS WALKING TOUR
Saturday October 27, 11am – 12:30pm
Meet at steps of Carnegie Community Centre, 401 Main

Take a walk through the neighbourhood for a glimpse into the current housing situation in the Downtown Eastside. The walk will address many questions. How many homeless people are in Vancouver? How long has homelessness been a problem? What have governments done to tackle homelessness and can they afford to build more social housing? What can the federal and provincial governments do to end homelessness? Walk led by Wendy Pedersen and Jean Swanson of the Carnegie Community Action Project. NO importa si no tiene experiencia o considera que no puede hacer adornos, ya que tendremos personas ayudándonos, lo importante es expresar nuestras ideas y aprender entre todos. Come to St. James’ Church and join in a decoration-making workshop to make masks, crosses and other decorations for the annual Day of the Dead Celebration being held Thursday November 1st. This concert will be recorded live and heard on Canada Live hosted by Margaret Gallagher on CBC Radio Two 105.7 FM.
Silk Road Music offers a musical performance that introduces audiences to different cultures through their experience, discoveries, and travels. Qiu Xia He is a virtuoso Chinese pipa performer, recording artist, composer and producer who’s changing and enhancing the musical world around her. Andre Thibault is a brilliant guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, whose fiery rhythms and stunning technique are drawn from a unique blend of flamenco and Moorish traditions coloured with jazz, classical and world music. Joining Qiu Xia and Andre for today’s concert is special guest Jun Rong. After a prestigious career in China, Jun moved to Vancouver where her extraordinary command of the erhu (Chinese violin) has awed her audiences. Benefit Concert for St James’ Children Music Academy. The 90-voice Universal Gospel Choir, conducted by Kathryn Nicholson, will bring their rollicking, hand-clapping, foot-stomping style to the grandiose setting of St. James’ Anglican Church. The event will highlight gospel songs from around the world and will be emceed by Vancouver music maven, Leila Getz. All proceeds from the event will go to St. James’ Music Academy, an initiative offering affordable music education to children living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
