Community Showcase
ASIAN VOICES – MUSIC, STORIES & FILM
Friday October 26, 7:30pm
Carnegie Community Centre Theatre
401 Main

This special concert of music, stories and film features Asian Canadian artists of our community - from the exhilarating big drum sound of Canada’s first all female taiko ensemble Sawagi Taiko, to Larry Wong’s personal stories of growing up in Chinatown, to our next wave of artists - the young and upcoming Seymour Taiko Drummers from Admiral Seymour Elementary school under the direction of project teacher Doug Masahara; from DTES/Strathcona resident and community treasure Takeo Yamashiro, one of the most influential shakuhachi masters in North America, to Karin Lee and her film Comrade Dad, a personal recollection about her father, his 1960-80’s Chinatown Arts and Craft Store and how both her father and his ideologies affected his family; from Chinatown born Elwin Xie and his insights of growing up in his family’s laundry business before it was expropriated for urban renewal, backed up on electric bass by Chinatown musician, poet and head tax activist Sean Gunn; to long time community advocate Hayne Wai and his 1970’s classic independent film Lo-fan Town, a witty satire that portrays Vancouver as exotic and stereotypical whitetown. The appearance of Sawagi Taiko at this evening’s performance is made possible by the generous support of the Powell Street Festival Society. Free

St. James’ Anglican Church

Delirio Amoroso: Handel’s Italian Years, with Alexander Weimann (harpsichord and guest leader), Chloe Meyers (violin), and Washington McClain (oboe). As a young musical hopeful, Georg Händel took a trip to Italy to find out what was going on in that musical world. The Italians were singing (what else?), and the composer quickly adopted an exuberant operatic style. Il Delirio Amoroso was one of three cantatas he composed at that time. In this concert you’ll not only hear what Händel wrote, but also what he heard. Music by Handel interspersed with Stradella, Corelli and Perti. Mamma mia, bring on the pasta. You’ll love it! Free
• also on Friday is the famous St. James Bargain Sale from 11am to 12:30pm. The church basement will be packed with lots of bargains!
