“her rain” Lani Maestro
October 16 to December 4
Centre A, 2 W. Hastings

Centre A is pleased to present her rain, new work by internationally acclaimed Canadian artist Lani Maestro, curator: Makiko Hara. Maestro’s work uses simple visual language that is poetic, powerful and complex, and defies conventional interpretation. her rain responds directly to the location of Centre A and its cultural significance based on the artist’s preliminary visit in 2008. In the space Maestro creates, she poses an open-ended philosophical question: “how is subjectivity situated?” She transforms the gallery into a large sculpture using minimal elements: text made in neon that is reflected on the floor and visitors are invited to experience a “mindful presence.” The installation is accompanied by the animated text video brenda console, a rear projection viewed from the street that acts as sculpture and architecture. Lani Maestro is a Canadian artist born in the Philippines who now divides her time between France and Canada. For more information www.centrea.org
