FIRST NATIONS ARTIST STUDIO

On weekday afternoons during the Festival, the artists of the Raven’s Eye Studio will open the doors to host an ongoing First Nations artist studio. A group of artists work in the studio on a regular basis and they are happy to talk with you. See the artwork, talk to the artists. Artists include studio coordinator Jerry Whitehead, painter and muralist, and sculptor Gary Oliver. Make sure you take the opportunity to talk with Jerry about the spectacular mural, Through the Eye of the Raven, on the side of the Orwell Hotel where the studio is based on the ground floor. Free

HEALTHY AGING THROUGH THE ARTS

Healthy Aging Through the Arts is a collaborative project between seniors and artists working together to explore the seniors’ stories through art. The Strathcona Seniors puppet group, led by artists Sharon Bayly and Maggie Winston, present Playtime, a story told by humanette puppets: the seniors use their own head and an attached miniature body to perform. It is fun to watch and a pleasure to share the enjoyment of art with the seniors. Come out and see this delightful performance. Everyone welcome.

Drop in for a casual chat, a cup of tea and a taste of fresh theatre writing from established and emerging playwrights. The writers reading include Downtown Eastside community theatre makers Brenda Prince, UBC Masters student in Creative Writing; Patrick Foley, longtime community activist, songwriter and playwright; Leith Harris, poet, writer and athlete; and special guest PTC associate, creator, actor, dramaturge and dancer Lisa C. Ravensbergen. Our host for the afternoon is producer, director and PTC Dramaturg Kathleen Flaherty. Come for fifteen minutes or stay for ninety. Free

Come along to the Carnegie Community Choir’s regular session and join in the fun! Enjoy a safe place to sing original and international a capella arrangements, play with group vocal improvisation, and experience techniques to free your natural voice. The choir is led by music and theatre facilitator Metta Paterson, who creates safe spaces where groups are able to revel in creativity, spontaneous play, empathic connection and powerful communication. CREATING PAULINE: CITY OPERA VANCOUVER

City Opera Vancouver offers an informal presentation about the creation of the new opera Pauline (by Margaret Atwood and Tobin Stokes) scheduled to premiere May 2014. City Opera will provide an introduction to the life of Canadian poet and performer Pauline Johnson (1861-1913) and a taste of the music from the opera. The Festival is thrilled to welcome special guests including composer Tobin Stokes, director Norman Armour, singer Rose-Ellen Nichols, pianist David Boothroyd, and conductor and artistic director Charles Barber. Discussion welcome. Free

WORLD POETRY CAFÉ

Ariadne Sawyer and Alejandro Mujica Olea, the hosts of World Poetry Café, are pleased to celebrate the Heart of the City Festival with poetry, interviews, creative tips and music. Tonight they welcome Wanda John-Kehewin, Cree poet who uses writing to understand and respond to the near decimation of First Nations culture; Rene Hugo Sanchez, award-winning musician, folklorist and poet, originally from Peru; and the Downtown Eastside’s own Richard Tylman who is honoured to share a poem written by his friend the late Sandy Cameron about holocaust victim and martyr Janusz Korczak, – “beautiful and heart-wrenching.” Together, we will create a universe of love.
